What Does Music Mean to YOU?

It has been said that ‘music soothes the savage beast’ and that statement rings true! People enjoy listening to music for various reasons. For some, music reminds them of a relaxing evening, perhaps by a fire on a cold night with a hot cup of tea. Still, others enjoy listening to their music as they wile away the hours in a local night clubs until the wee hours of morning. Some people  privately enjoy their favorite tunes while exercising, doing yoga, jogging or various other personal activities. Then, there are those who associate music with thoughts of loud guitars at ear spanking decimals accompanied by ritualistic headbanging! No matter what kind of music is preferred, there will always be one common thread which binds people of all races, sex, color and creed together; the love of music.

Music is a powerful attribute that has shaped, as well as influenced human history. The Pythagorean Theorem for instance, was considered to be the mathematical explanation of the key to the universe, according to the philosophers in Ancient Greece. A secret society of mathematicians (who were also musicians) discovered that it was possible to measure music using this theorem, thus conceptually ‘connecting‘ mathematics to everything in the entire universe, including music.

Over the years, musical progression has molded society as a whole. As soul evolved into hip-hop and rap music, county music fused with jazz to produce the early version of rock and roll. These changes essentially paved the way for newer types of music to emerge. With the birth of so many different genres, is has become much harder to categorize different styles of music efficiently. No matter what type of music someone chooses to listen to, it will always be held in a special place; in the hearts of those who listen.

So next time you turn up your radio, iPad, car stereo, or plug your headphones in ask yourself ? ‘What DOES music really mean to me?’
