Anyone who grew up back in the late 70’s through the early 80’s listening to bands such as KISS, ALICE COOPER and BLACK SABBATH has probably once in their life, fantasized about being a rock star or joining their favorite band. For most people , the dream usually fades away, and becomes life’s reality; marriage, children and of course, the nine to five job. There are however, exceptions to every rule. Eric Singer is definitely one of those exceptions.
Born and raised in Euclid, Ohio, Eric was highly influenced by the local Cleveland rock and roll stations as a teenager. With a passion for rock and roll, he decided to venture out on his own. Eric moved to Los Angeles in 1983. This would later prove to be the best decision of his career. Ten months later, Eric landed his first big rock gig, joining LITA FORD as her drummer. He went on to play for ALICE COOPER, on and off, for a total of 13 years, also laying studio tracks for guitar legends such as RONNIE MONTROSE, GARY MOORE, BRIAN MAY and BLACK SABBATH. Eric also, formed a group by the name of BADLANDS, with Ozzy’s former guitarist, JAKE E. LEE. Finally, he landed the job of performing as the powerhouse drummer in the legendary band, KISS, where he has remained for the last thirteen years.
Q- When was the very first time you performed in front of an audience?
ERIC- “I performed live in front of my 5th grade class, with a couple of friends. I used a janitor’s cart to carry my drum set to the classroom. We did ‘Hey Jude’ in front of all my classmates. I was petrified! I can remember being really scared. Anyway, I hooked up with a couple of my neighbors started a band called ‘The Axe’, and we played basement shows for a while”.
Q- Who was the first band you actually played with for any length of time ?
ERIC- “I was about 12 years old when I landed my first gig and it was a seat in my father’s band, ‘The Johnny Singer Orchestra’. I played with him for at least the next ten years. I ended up moving to Los Angeles in 1983 and played with a couple of local bands. Then, about 10 months later, I heard that Lita Ford was holding auditions. I went in, played and she hired me”.
Q- Do you have a performer who you really enjoyed playing with more than others?
ERIC– “From a musician’s standpoint, I would have to say I loved playing with Brian May. Growing up, QUEEN was one of my most favorite bands, along with MOTT THE HOOPLE and of course, KISS”.
Q- If you could change one thing about your career, what would it be and why?
ERIC- “I always wanted to learn how to play guitar. I have a very extensive guitar collection and would like to be able to play them, but I just don’t have what I call guitar hands! Also,1 the guitarists and singers have way more influence on actually writing the songs.“.
Q- What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the music business?
ERIC- ” I would have to say that you should make sure you know what you are signing, how it affects you, and what kind of, if any, repercussions there might be. Always read the fine print, because knowledge is power.”
Q– Do you have a funny story from the road you might like to share?
ERIC- “One time when I was touring with Alice Cooper, we had a gig and during the very first song I cut my finger on my cymbal really bad. Well, Alice Cooper shows move really fast from one song to the next with no breaks in between. So there I was, bleeding all over the place, had my drum tech trying to clean me up between songs as best as he could and finally when Alice noticed what was going on he came over and said ‘Oh cool. Real Blood !’ “
ONE FINAL THOUGHT-
ERIC- “There is a piece of paper that I got in a hotel, on my refrigerator because I really like what it says. Its a quote that was made by John Lennon. “Life is what happens when your making plans” .
And so, as KISS continues to sell out venues worldwide, and belt out the classics like GOD OF THUNDER, LOVE GUN, DETROIT ROCK CITY, STRUTTER and so many other beloved hits, make sure to look near the back of the stage, just behind Paul. There you will see Eric Singer- The Cat, banging the hell out of the drums for THE HOTTEST BAND IN THE WORLD!
